Jharkhand Cabinet Grants Transgenders OBC Status and Monthly Pension
In a landmark decision aimed at promoting inclusivity and social welfare, the Jharkhand cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, has given its green light to a proposal granting transgenders inclusion in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The cabinet meeting, which took place on Tuesday, also yielded several other significant approvals spanning education, healthcare, agriculture, and rural development.
The primary highlight of the cabinet’s deliberations is the historic decision to include transgenders within the OBC category and extend to them a monthly pension of Rs 1000. This move seeks to elevate the socio-economic status of transgender individuals and provide them with a sustainable financial support system. The pension scheme will be available to transgender individuals above the age of 18, provided they possess a domicile certificate of Jharkhand. The pension amount will be directly deposited into their bank accounts, ensuring ease of access and financial security.
“This decision underscores our commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of the transgender community within our state,” emphasized the cabinet secretary.
In addition to this significant stride towards inclusivity, the Jharkhand cabinet also approved a series of other noteworthy proposals that will have a far-reaching impact on the state’s development.
One such proposal entails increasing the retirement age of teachers and professors within state universities from 65 to 70 years. This measure is aimed at retaining experienced and highly qualified faculty members within the state’s educational institutions, fostering academic excellence.
Furthermore, the cabinet’s progressive agenda includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art medical college and hospital in Godda district, backed by an impressive investment of Rs 750 crore.
