Jharkhand government has greenlit the allocation of 150 acres of land in Itki, Ranchi, to the Azim Premji Foundation’s for the establishment of a new university. The foundation, spearheaded by billionaire philanthropist and Wipro founder Azim Premji, envisions creating a world-class institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in diverse fields, including education, development, public policy, and social sciences. The primary focus of the university will be on research and innovation to address societal challenges, particularly those faced by marginalized and disadvantaged sections.
The state cabinet, in its meeting on Monday, officially approved the land allotment, following the foundation’s submission of a proposal to the government in 2019. According to the cabinet decision, the foundation will pay a nominal lease rent of Rs. 1 lakh per acre for a tenure of 99 years. Additionally, the foundation will undertake the responsibility of developing the necessary infrastructure and facilities for the university, with plans for it to commence operations within the next three to four years.
The Azim Premji Foundation, with a commendable track record spanning over two decades, has been actively engaged in education and social development across 15 states in India. Notably, the foundation currently operates the Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, established in 2010, offering programs in education, development, public policy, and sustainability. The overarching vision of the foundation is to contribute to the creation of a just, equitable, humane, and sustainable society.
