Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren advocates for a Sarna code in a letter to PM Modi

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the importance of implementing a separate Sarna code for the tribal communities of the state. The Sarna code is seen as crucial to safeguard the identity, culture, and rights of the tribals, who consider water, forest, and land as their sacred scriptures.

Soren highlighted the prolonged struggle of the tribals to gain recognition for their distinct religious and cultural identity. He emphasized that the Sarna code would aid in preserving their traditions and customs, currently under threat from various forces. Moreover, the Sarna code would ensure that tribals receive their rightful share in the country’s socio-economic development.

The CM noted that Jharkhand has a population of about 3.29 crore, with 86 lakh being tribals. He commended the tribals for living in harmony with nature and contributing to environmental conservation. Their rich and diverse heritage, he stressed, should be acknowledged and celebrated.

Soren urged Modi to promptly take measures to grant the Sarna code to the tribals, asserting that it would address their long-standing demand and reinforce the unity and integrity of the nation. He viewed the Sarna code as a befitting tribute to tribal freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The letter, written on September 25, 2023, coincided with the Karma festival, a significant event for the tribals of Jharkhand. Soren shared the letter on his Twitter handle, garnering support from numerous tribal leaders and activists.
