Late Rajiv Gandhi’s children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, paid tribute to their father in Delhi on the occasion of his death anniversary. The solemn event was marked by heartfelt emotions as the siblings remembered the legacy of their father, who served as the sixth Prime Minister of India.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi, highlighting his transformative contributions to the nation. Kharge emphasized how Rajiv Gandhi’s interventions, such as lowering the voting age, strengthening Panchayati Raj, spearheading the Telecom and IT revolution, and facilitating sustained peace accords, were instrumental in propelling India into the 21st century. His visionary leadership and progressive policies laid the foundation for the India we see today.

About Rajiv Gandhi:

Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth Prime Minister of India. He took over the charge in 1984 following the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was the youngest Indian PM even to assume office at age 40. He served as the Prime Minister of India till December 2, 1989.

Rajiv Gandhi assassination:

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at Sriperumbudur on 21st May, 32 years ago. The attack was carried out by a woman from the terror outfit LTTE. In an election rally at Sriperumbudur, the woman approached Rajiv Gandhi, touching his feet before detonating an RDX explosive-laden belt concealed beneath her dress. The assassin was identified as Thenmozhi Rajaratnam alias Dhanu from Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

Today, as we commemorate the anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi’s tragic assassination, we not only remember his extraordinary leadership and contributions but also honor the values he stood for.
