Around 82 years ago, in the year 1940, Mahatma Gandhi visited this place for the 53rd Indian National Congress Convention. The bond between Mahatma Gandhi and Ramgarh, Jharkhand, runs deep. In 1940, during the 53rd Indian National Congress Convention, Mahatma Gandhi visited this region. This convention held immense importance as it addressed several critical issues. During this event, Mahatma Gandhi called upon society to abolish practices like purdah, untouchability, illiteracy, and superstitions, primarily affecting women.
A Sea of Enthusiastic Admirers
According to elderly residents, a significant number of people from distant places gathered along the banks of the Damodar River near Harhari Ghat to catch a glimpse of Mahatma Gandhi. The convention was organized at the same location. Tents and accommodations were set up along the banks of the Harhari River for the leaders. Despite heavy rainfall, the three-day convention outlined the roadmap for the Quit India Movement against British rule.
Presence of Eminent Leaders
Under the leadership of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Ramgarh Convention saw the participation of prominent leaders, including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Shrikrishna Sinha, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Several other distinguished leaders joined the event. It is said that as soon as Mahatma Gandhi called upon everyone to work towards independence, the entire venue echoed with chants of freedom.
Ramgarh’s Association with Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashes
Due to its historical significance, Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were brought to Ramgarh in 1948, seven years after the convention. This decision was influenced by Ramgarh’s connection with the Mahatma. A memorial site was established on the banks of the Damodar River, now famously known as Gandhi Ghat. This serene memorial site continues to captivate visitors, and ceremonies are organized here on October 2nd and January 30th each year. The events are attended by officials and local residents alike.
