Ranchi Sees Rapid Development but Crime Rates Soar(Crime on the Rise)
Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand, is witnessing remarkable development; however, the city is also experiencing a surge in crime rates. As of 2023, Ranchi tops the list in terms of all types of crimes registered in police stations across the state.
Despite strict directives from Chief Minister Hemant Soren to tighten crime control measures, criminals continue to strike on a daily basis.
According to data from the Crime Investigation Department (CID) for the past five years, Ranchi has witnessed the highest number of fraud cases in Jharkhand, with 19,383 individuals falling victim to various scams. Ranchi alone recorded a staggering 3,545 cases, followed closely by Jamshedpur with 2,191 cases. Ranchi also ranks first in cybercrimes, with 5,350 cases reported in Jharkhand over the last five years, including 1,432 cases registered in Ranchi alone.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, Ranchi reported the highest number of cybercrime cases, with 478 cases registered, mainly due to increased mobile phone usage during that period. Dhanbad ranked second with 406 cases. However, these figures are based on cases reported to police stations, and the actual number of such crimes may be much higher, as many incidents go unreported.
