Dumri Assembly Seat Bypoll Results in a Resounding Victory for JMM’s Bebi Devi
In a thrilling electoral battle, Bebi Devi of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerged victorious in the Dumri Assembly seat by-election, securing a convincing lead of over 17,000 votes against her opponent, NDA candidate Yashoda Devi. This crucial by-election, held on September 5, marked a significant turning point in the political landscape of Jharkhand.
Out of the 2.98 lakh eligible voters, an impressive 64.84 percent exercised their franchise, underscoring the significance of this electoral event. The Dumri bypoll became necessary following the untimely demise of JMM MLA Jagarnath Mahto, the state’s Education Minister, in April. Mahto had been the dedicated representative of this constituency since 2004.
Official sources reported that Bebi Devi, not only the JMM’s candidate but also the nominee of the INDIA bloc, secured a total of 1,00,317 votes. In contrast, her rival from the NDA, Yashoda Devi, managed to garner approximately 83,164 votes. After meticulously counting the ballots over 24 rounds, Giridih deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer Naman Priyesh Lakra confirmed Bebi Devi’s resounding victory, with a substantial margin of 17,153 votes.
Bebi Devi’s triumphant win was not just a political triumph but a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, former Jharkhand minister Jagarnath Mahto, whose passing earlier this year necessitated this by-election. She regarded her victory as a “true tribute” to Mahto’s dedicated service to the Dumri constituency for nearly two decades.
The high voter turnout and the enthusiastic participation of the electorate in this by-election underscored the significance of their choice in shaping the future of Dumri and the broader political landscape of Jharkhand.
