Bamboo day history
World Bamboo Day is celebrated annually on September 18. It was officially declared on this date in 2009 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand. The idea for a World Bamboo Day was conceptualized by Kamlesh Salam, former President of the World Bamboo Organization (WBO), and delegates from around a hundred countries.
The day was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the renowned bamboo researcher, Nobel Laureate, and former President of India. Dr. Kalam was a strong advocate for bamboo’s potential to combat poverty and environmental degradation.
