Jharkhand is gearing up to kickstart the process of a caste census soon, with Chief Minister Chmpai soren giving his nod to the initiative. Following the CM’s approval, the concerned department will prepare the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) related to it.
Once the SOP is prepared, it will be brought before the cabinet for approval in a meeting. The level of preparation indicates that the process of caste census in the state is likely to commence shortly after the Lok Sabha elections.
CM Chmpai soren’s Post Taking to social media platform, Chief Minister Chmpai soren wrote on Sunday, “The more the number, the more the participation. Jharkhand is ready.”
Chief Secretary Vinay Kumar Choubey mentioned that directions have been given to prepare the SOP. The caste census in the state will be modeled after Bihar’s methodology, where a caste-based survey was conducted.
Data collection was undertaken last year during this phase. It was deliberated upon various departments, including rural development and social welfare, for the caste census. However, ultimately, the personnel department was chosen for the survey.
Rahul Gandhi’s Advocacy for Caste-based Census It’s noteworthy that legislators from the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) coalition in the state have been advocating for a caste-based census.
They have raised this demand multiple times in the state legislature. Earlier this month, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra organized by the Congress, former national president Rahul Gandhi also advocated for a caste-based census.
He promised to remove the 50 percent cap on reservation and conduct a nationwide caste-based census if an opposition coalition formed the government at the center.
