Ranchi, one of India’s 100 smart cities, is steering its urban landscape towards eco-friendliness by embracing green building practices. Aligned with the Smart City Mission’s vision, Ranchi aims to cover a minimum of 37% of its area with greenery. The Ranchi Smart City Corporation Limited (RSCCL) is taking proactive steps to incentivize the construction of green buildings, which play a pivotal role in minimizing environmental impact during both construction and operation phases.

Green buildings, at the forefront of this initiative, harness renewable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and biogas plants to fulfill their energy requirements. They incorporate water-efficient fixtures, including low-flow taps, showers, and toilets, to conserve water. Additionally, these buildings utilize recycled, biodegradable, or locally sourced materials, reducing waste and carbon footprint. Prioritizing the well-being of occupants, green buildings integrate features such as natural ventilation, daylighting, and green roofs to enhance indoor air quality and overall comfort.

To encourage the adoption of green building practices, the RSCCL has introduced a range of incentives for builders and owners. These incentives include tax rebates, subsidies, and expedited approval processes. Collaborating with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the RSCCL aims to certify green buildings in Ranchi. The IGBC has developed a comprehensive rating system, evaluating various parameters such as site selection, water and energy efficiency, material usage, indoor environmental quality, and innovation.

By championing green building initiatives, the RSCCL envisions not only enhancing the quality of life for Ranchi’s residents but also contributing to national and global efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to creating a sustainable and resilient urban environment for future generations.
