Ajit Pawar, the prominent leader of Maharashtra’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister of the state on July 2, 2023. The official ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, where Pawar, along with 12 other ministers representing the ruling coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress, took the oath of office and secrecy. As the nephew of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar previously held the position of Deputy Chief Minister from 2010 to 2014 and briefly in 2019.

Ajit Pawar’s political journey has been marked by noteworthy turns, particularly his role in the formation of the current alliance government. In November 2019, a dramatic twist unfolded when he rebelled against his own party and aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to establish a short-lived government. However, within a mere three days, Pawar resigned and rejoined the NCP, paving the way for the creation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Shiv Sena’s chief, Uddhav Thackeray.

The induction of Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister carries substantial significance for the stability and coordination of the coalition government, which has faced challenges both from the opposition BJP and from within its own ranks. With his experience and influence, Pawar is expected to assume key responsibilities, including crucial portfolios such as finance, irrigation, and power, as part of the cabinet reshuffle.

By assuming this role, Ajit Pawar aims to contribute to the effective functioning of the government and bolster the coalition’s ability to address various challenges. His appointment not only strengthens the alliance but also underscores the commitment to governance and unity within the ruling coalition. As Maharashtra moves forward, Pawar’s leadership and expertise are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the state’s future.
