Preserving Tradition, Embracing Purity

The method of preparing palm jaggery in Udangudi stands distinct due to its unwavering commitment to tradition. Unlike many other regions, Udangudi’s artisans refrain from incorporating modern strategies or chemical additives like triple super phosphate and phosphoric acid. This commitment to purity is at the heart of Udangudi’s palm jaggery.

A Unique Taste of Udangudi

What sets Udangudi’s palm jaggery apart is its unique soil composition. The presence of red sand dune soil, coupled with Udangudi’s dry climatic conditions, results in palm sap with a high sucrose content, enhancing its natural taste. The dry climate also ensures optimal storage conditions, allowing the palm jaggery to maintain its freshness for extended periods.

Exporting Tradition Across Borders

Udangudi’s palm jaggery, known as ‘Karuppukatti,’ has garnered international acclaim. Exported to various countries, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore, it has become a sought-after culinary delight globally. Additionally, the region boasts over 500 wholesale dealers for its famed jaggery.

Traditional Craftsmanship at Its Best

The production process involves the meticulous collection of palm sap, gently boiled and carefully solidified into the iconic hemispherical shape, known as ‘Karuppukatti.’ Castor seeds are used as an antifoaming agent, ensuring the purity and quality of the jaggery. The result is a delectable, coarse sugar that has been cherished for generations.

In essence, Udangudi’s GI-tagged Panangkarupatti stands as a testament to the rich heritage and unwavering commitment to purity of the artisans in this region. Its unique taste, coupled with traditional craftsmanship, continues to captivate hearts far beyond the shores of Udangudi
