Padma Shri Honor for Jharkhand’s Archery Maestro Purnima Mahato and Environmental Crusader Chami Murmu

The Central Government announced the prestigious Padma Shri awards for two distinguished individuals from Jharkhand. International archery coach Purnima Mahato from Birsanagar, Jamshedpur, and tribal environmentalist Chami Murmu from Saraikela-Kharsawan will be honored with the Padma Shri.

Expressing her joy, Purnima Mahato mentioned feeling honored and expressed gratitude towards the Central Government and Tata Steel for their support in recognizing her achievements. The announcement reflects acknowledgment for Purnima’s contributions in the field of sports and Chami’s dedicated work in environmental conservation and women’s empowerment.

Purnima Mahato, associated with Tata Archery Academy, received accolades when she was honored with the Dronacharya Award on August 29, 2013, for her outstanding achievements. Born into a humble family in Birsanagar, Purnima has carved a unique identity in the world of archery, contributing significantly to the nation alongside archers like Deepika Kumari, Jayant Talukdar, and Dola Banerjee.

Chami Murmu, a native of Dukh Maanjhi in Purulia, West Bengal, has been selected for her work in environmental conservation. In an interview with Dainik Jagran, Purnima Mahato expressed her happiness and mentioned feeling a sense of increased responsibility with the Padma Shri announcement. Notable personalities, including Union Minister Arjun Munda and Chief Minister Hemant Soren, congratulated Purnima and Chami on their achievements.

Purnima Mahato has brought pride to the country through her coaching at the Tata Archery Academy and also served as the coach for the Indian archery team during the London Olympics in 2008. She was first selected in the Jharkhand archery team in 1992 and remained a national champion for many years.

Chami Murmu has dedicated her life to the protection of trees and environmental conservation. The Padma Shri announcement recognizes her significant contributions to the cause. Purnima Mahato and Chami Murmu join the league of eminent personalities who have brought glory to the nation, and their achievements will undoubtedly inspire many in the years to come.
