The installation of smart meters in Ranchi has not been completed yet. Out of 3.50 lakh electricity consumers’ homes in the entire city, smart meters are supposed to be installed. However, only 2.22 lakh homes have been equipped with smart meters so far. It has been instructed by JBVNL to the company to complete the target by September.
Prepaid System Lagging
2.22 lakh homes in Ranchi have been fitted with smart meters, there is a considerable delay in integrating them with IT. Only after integration, consumers can use the meter in prepaid mode. This aspect is significantly lagging behind. As of now, around 25 thousand consumers’ meters have been prepaid.
Pay first, and then their electricity runs
This means they pay first, and then their electricity runs. Once the amount is exhausted, electricity is automatically cut off. Apart from these, consumers with smart meters installed in their homes are still waiting for meter readings and bills. They can only make payments after receiving the bills. The corporation has informed that work is progressing rapidly in the direction of integration with the IT system. All smart meters will be prepaid by September.
