The Bhuteshwar Mahadev temple in Mathura holds various mythological significances. It is believed that the Shiva temple in Mathura is from the era of Lord Krishna. Over time, Lord Shiva has manifested in various forms in the temple, witnessing the divine play of his beloved deity, Lord Krishna.

The resonance of Lord Hari-Hari (Shiva) echoes in the leela sthali of Lord Krishna during the month of Sawan. All the temples in the district see Shiva devotees offering bel leaves and milk to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to legend, the idol of Lord Shiva in this temple is said to have manifested on its own due to Madhu’s intense penance, earning the name Bhuteshwar Mahadev. The title Bholenath for Lord Shiva in Mathura originated because of his presence during the Dvapara Yuga, protecting the residents of Braj and being associated with the worship of Lord Krishna.

In scriptures, the mention of Lord Bhuteshwar finds resonance with the linga form of Kedarnath. Therefore, those who seek the darshan of Bhuteshwar Mahadev are said to attain the benefits equivalent to visiting Kedarnath.

The temple is located approximately 2 kilometers from Mathura Railway Junction, and it continues to attract devotees who participate in the ritualistic ringing of bells and chanting of arati during specific hours. The Bhuteshwar Mahadev temple in Mathura stands as a revered heritage site with a deep-rooted connection to the spirituality of the region.
